Zooming out from mental health, it’s evident that many interconnected factors contribute to our overall well-being. Mental health isn’t an isolated issue but rather a reflection of various aspects of our lives.
Gut Health and Nutrition
One such aspect is our gut health and nutrition, which play a pivotal role in influencing our mental well-being. The food we consume provides essential nutrients, prebiotics, probiotics, and minerals that are necessary for optimal brain function and emotional balance. In my previous article about nutrition, I mentioned that there are two life changing foods for my gut health. These were blueberries and kimchi, which has a profound affect on my body and gut health.
More recently, I realized that I had been eating another superfood this whole time, which were avocados. You could probably Google all the benefits and nutrients found in this fruit. Yes, they’re a fruit but considered a vegetable in the culinary world and incredibly good for both the mind and body.
Physical Activity and Social Interaction
Moreover, engaging in regular physical activity is another crucial component of maintaining good mental health. Exercise not only benefits our physical health but also has a profound impact on our mental state. It triggers the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress and anxiety. Furthermore, physical activities often involve social interactions, providing opportunities for meaningful connections and support, which are vital for mental wellness.
When I reduced my physical activity to little or none, I usually find that I begin to ruminate more about negativity. Physical activity makes it so that our body devotes resources to repairing our muscles but also towards regulating the body more efficiently. It stresses the body in a way that helps to make it more resilient just like it does with the mind. Our body and it’s movement is connected with the mind, when we heal or strengthen the body, we are also working to healing and strengthen our mind.
Established Routine
Establishing a routine can also significantly contribute to managing mental health. A structured daily schedule can create a sense of order and stability in our lives, reducing feelings of chaos and overwhelm. It helps in managing stress levels and promotes better sleep patterns, both of which are essential for mental well-being. For me, I find that building a consistent wake up time and morning routine sets the day to become orderly. Once the routine becomes a habit and there is a level of consistency, the focus can then be on the rest of the day because the morning has been planned.
Integration
When we integrate these elements into our lives and prioritize our holistic health, we begin to see a positive transformation in our mental state. Each improvement, whether it’s adopting a healthier diet, staying active, or establishing a routine, contributes to building a solid foundation for better mental health. As we address these pieces of the puzzle, we pave the way for a happier, more balanced life.
