“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity. This is one reason why meaningful change does not require radical change. Small habits can make a meaningful difference by providing evidence of a new identity. And if a change is meaningful, it is actually big. That’s the paradox of making small improvements.”
– James Clear
I have recently decided to change many of my habits in my life, such as reducing social media usage, minimizing the time I spend on nightlife, and learning to eat healthily again. While I don’t advise anyone to do things too differently from how they’ve always done them (it may cause too much stress), it is good to really look at and be mindful of what one is doing.
As mentioned in the quote above, the actions you take are a vote for the type of person you wish to become. At the same time, the types of actions you don’t take are a vote for the type of person you don’t wish to become. For me, I wish to become the person who can achieve my goals personally, professionally, and spiritually. To move towards achieving these goals, I need to become a person who has the qualities to achieve and maintain the life that I want. I saw that the easiest way to do this is to either eliminate or replace all the things that I am doing that aren’t moving me closer to achievement.
Another way is also to find the path that has the least amount of resistance, but I also found that there is no need to rush. It rarely ever makes sense to rush to a goal unless the goal is clearly defined, as there have been times where I’ve reached my goal only to find out that it wasn’t what I really wanted. It is more important to spend the initial time figuring out specifically what I want to achieve success.
I’ve come to realize that there are many good and bad things in life, and my purpose, if I want to live a long and enjoyable life, is to do my best to reduce or avoid the bad and to create and find the good. This way, the trajectory of my life can only become increasingly better in one way, shape, or form. The combination of good intention and good action in a good direction will inevitably lead to the best possible outcomes, I find.
Until the next post, thank you for reading! As always, wishing you love and success!
